After the floods in 2007 we carried out repairs and refurbishments to several homes in the Swindon area. The flood damage will mean that there can be the need to strip out the flood damaged area of the house quite extensively. Often even though there may have been only 6inches of water on the ground floor the walls will probably need to be stripped back to brick up to a metre high all through the affected area. Water damage and possibility of mould growth will mean the walls will need to be completely dried out which is why we often us dehumidifiers, these may need to be left to dry out the house for several weeks, after which the walls will need to be treated with an anti fungal spray before the rebuilding can start.
The flooding may damage windows as well as walls and timber work, one of our clients had aluminium double glazed units which were quite old and with the bottom of the windows sitting in water the seals had gone and the window units had to be replaced throughout the ground floor, they also had to replace their floor mounted boiler as part of their insurance claim.
The insurance companies will often have to move the client out of their home while the work is carried out, which can be quite timely as the drying time of both the flooding and then the new refurbishment
building work and plaster before there can be any redecoration. Often as long as six months. Before the clients move back in.
We have worked with the insurance assessors and the clients untill they are happily back in their home. I have shown a gallery of the extensive strip out to one house after the flooding in 2007 on our Facebook page.
